Spotting Boards 105: How to manipulate data on stats.ncaa.org
Load schedules, rosters, player stats and more with the simple copy and pasting of a web address
The website stats.ncaa.org has statistics and rosters for every college, in most sports, for all three NCAA sanctioned divisions. That means whether you’re broadcasting big time college football or Division III college soccer, there’s a really good chance it can be a valuable resource for you.
Also, unlike each individual school’s website, you’re going to get the data delivered to you in a consistent way. All 360+ Division I NCAA men’s basketball teams’ tables will have the same layout, with the same columns implying the same categories, which makes it a great candidate to scrape data from.
Today, we’ll use many of the same functions we’ve already gone over to begin the process of building an automatable spotting board from scratch. One that will allow you to quickly crank out a board for any basketball team, whether it’s D1 or D3, by following the instructions in today’s video. It loads schedules, rosters and individual player stats to the same workbook by simply pasting the link to a team’s home page in a designated cell.
